An alternator is a spinning magnet, a set of windings, and the electronics that turn the result into steady DC voltage. A rebuild works through each of those, rather than replacing only the part that finally failed.
A battery light that flickers, blinks, or comes on intermittently is the early warning. Worn brushes bounce, and every bounce is a micro-arc that puts heat into the slip rings. Left alone, that arcing scores and eventually melts the slip rings on the spinning rotor, which turns a brush set into a far more expensive repair.
