Why heavy-duty units are a different job

Heavy-duty starting and charging is not just a larger version of a car system. The differences are what make specialist help worth the trip.

  • 24v systems are common. Series batteries, higher voltage, and different failure behavior from the 12v systems most shops see all day.
  • Cranking loads are far larger. Big-displacement diesels draw enormous current, so cable, connection, and contact condition matters much more.
  • Duty cycles are punishing. Frequent starts, long idles, heavy accessory loads, dust, vibration, and heat all shorten the life of brushes and bearings.
  • Part numbers are not always in retail catalogs. Many units are identified by casting and label numbers rather than a vehicle lookup.
  • Units are often obsolete. When a replacement is no longer made, a or is frequently the practical route.
  • Downtime is the real cost. Which is why testing to confirm the fault beats replacing parts on a guess.

What to bring with the unit

Heavy-duty units are often easier to identify from the unit itself than from the machine, so bring the complete unit and any readable label or casting information.

  • Equipment. Machine type, make, model, engine, and application.
  • System voltage. 6v, 12v, or 24v, if you know it.
  • Part details. Part number, label numbers, output rating, or casting numbers.
  • The problem. No crank, slow crank, charging fault, noise, or repeat failures on the same machine.
  • Photos. The unit, the label, and the mounting end. These answer most identification questions on their own.
