Signs the alternator is the problem
Charging faults show up differently from starting faults. Mention whichever of these you are seeing when you get in touch.
- Battery light on and staying on. A solid dashboard battery light means the charging system has stopped doing its job.
- Battery light that flickers or blinks. Very often worn carbon brushes bouncing on the slip rings. Worth catching early.
- Engine dies when the jumper cables come off. The classic sign that the alternator is not producing enough current to run the engine on its own.
- Dim, pulsing, or surging lights. Output that rises and falls instead of holding steady.
- Batteries that keep going flat. A good battery that will not stay charged is often being asked to do the alternator's job.
- Whining, growling, or a burnt smell. Usually bearings, or a belt slipping against a seizing pulley.
- Boiling batteries or bulbs burning out early. The opposite problem, and usually the voltage regulator.

Common questions
Can I bring an alternator to the shop for testing?
Yes. Testing is part of what we do. You can bring the unit to 3511 Avenue A, Lubbock, TX 79404 during walk-in hours, Monday through Thursday, 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Friday is closed for regular hours, so call 806-407-5227 ahead of time.
My battery light flickers instead of staying on. Is that still the alternator?
Usually, yes. A flickering or intermittent battery light commonly means the carbon brushes have worn down and are losing contact with the slip rings. It is worth acting on early, because the arcing that causes the flicker will eventually score or melt the slip rings on the rotor and turn a brush replacement into a much larger repair.
