Signs the starter is the problem
These symptoms point toward the starter rather than the battery or the charging system. Mention whichever ones you are seeing when you get in touch.
- No crank with a good battery. The engine does not turn over at all, even with a booster connected and the cables clean and tight.
- A single loud click. The solenoid pulls in but the motor does not spin, which often points to the contacts or the motor itself.
- Rapid clicking that does not change. Worth checking the battery and cables first, but a starter draw problem can produce the same sound.
- Slow, laboring crank. The engine turns, but far slower than normal, once the battery and cable connections have been ruled out.
- Grinding or whirring. Usually the starter drive or the ring gear engagement rather than the motor.
- Intermittent starting. It works cold, fails hot, or fails at random — often heat-related resistance inside the unit.

Can I bring a starter to the shop for testing?
Yes. Testing is part of what we do, and you can bring the unit to 3511 Avenue A, Lubbock, TX 79404 during walk-in hours, Monday through Thursday, 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Friday is closed for regular hours, so call 806-407-5227 ahead of time.
Do you repair the starter or replace it?
It depends on what testing shows. A worn solenoid, brush set, or starter drive is often repairable, while heat damage to the armature or field coils can make a replacement the more sensible option. We will tell you what the unit needs before any work is done.
